Patrick Mahomes on the scars of the AFC Championship

“Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is still dealing with the wounds from the collapse, calling that game recently his ‘worst playoff football’:

‘That second half I played, I didn’t play really good football at all. Probably my worst playoff football I’ve played was the second half of the game. So I’m just trying to use that as a learning thing that whenever I’m struggling or a team’s struggling, just find a way to get positive plays, because when you have a lead like that, you don’t want to lose that lead.’”

In this piece, Mark Schofield details one of the biggest reasons why the Chiefs collapsed against the Bengals: the drop-eight defense. It’s a good breakdown, and I respond to it in Touchdown Wire’s daily NFL newsletter.

In my response, I note that the biggest answer the Chiefs could have against drop-eight is a better running game in 2022. With Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Ronald Jones, Isiah Pacheco, Jerick McKinnon and Derrick Gore battling for time in the Chiefs’ running back room, K.C. has several guys who can take the reigns and complement Patrick Mahomes for a more balanced offense.

It’s really a matter of whether coach Andy Reid is ready to commit to a more balanced regime. I think he is, given the personnel the team chased this offseason. The Chiefs signed several receivers who can block much better than their receiving squad last year. With more trust in everyone contributing to blocking in the run game, the Chiefs might be poised to revert back to a traditional-style offense rather than one that has relied on guys like Tyreek Hill to make big plays.
