Jets training camp position battles and a season prediction

Summer break is over for the Jets. Rookies have already reported to Florham Park and veterans arrive Tuesday, with the first training camp practice the next day.

This is a big season for Robert Saleh, Zach Wilson and company. What do you need to know before practices kick into high gear?

Fans can attend seven training camp practices this year: July 30, then six in August (2, 6, 8, 14, 19, 20). Aug. 6 is New York’s annual Green and White scrimmage. Practices on Aug. 19 and 20 are joint workouts with the Falcons.

Seahawks training camp preview

Seahawks training camp is right around the corner, with rookies and veterans set to report to team headquarters at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center on Tuesday.

Seattle will hold its first practice Wednesday afternoon. It will be one of 13 camp practices open to the public, including the mock game at Lumen Field on Aug. 6. The mock game serves as a tune-up before the team’s three preseason games. The Seahawks will play at the Steelers on Aug. 13, at home against the Bears on Aug. 18 and on the road against Dallas on Aug. 26. The initial 53-man roster will be set Aug. 30.

As training camp nears, let’s examine the biggest questions Seattle must have answered at various points during camp and the three preseason games. All stats are provided by TruMedia unless stated otherwise.

Plan shifts for Rams’ Jalen Ramsey in recovery from injury

Cornerback Jalen Ramsey worked with the defense in installation periods Sunday, largely at the beginning of practice (he also did an on-field workout with team athletic trainers later in the day). The Rams said Friday that Ramsey, who is recovering from shoulder surgery to repair one of two torn A.C. joints he suffered midseason in 2021, would go on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to open camp, but the team shifted that plan Sunday.

“Doctors cleared him in a limited fashion,” McVay said, “that enables him to participate in a lot of the jog-throughs, the above-the-neck stuff, and to be able to have him out here with his teammates with all of the different things that we ask of him. He felt good about that, we felt good about that, and so I think that’s what’s best for our football team, (and why) we pivoted in that direction.”

Lions training camp preview

OK, everyone. Summer’s over.

Dan Campbell’s Detroit Lions will officially open training camp for the 2022 season this week, hitting the field Wednesday in Allen Park for the first workout of camp. Season ticket holders will get the first chance to see the team live during Saturday morning’s practice (8:30 a.m.), and the general public can attend practices Aug. 1-4 and Aug. 8-10.

More important, though, this means the actual football season is just around the corner. And before the Lions get fully into the dog days of camp, let’s stop and reset everything we’ve learned about the team to this point — position battles to watch, a rookie report, possible breakout players, key storylines to follow and, of course, season predictions.

Let’s get to the football.

Who wins the AFC West?

On paper, the AFC West is loaded. There’s an outside shot all four teams could make the playoffs, especially with the new postseason format allowing an additional team from each conference to make it. In a quarterback-driven league, the fourth-best quarterback in the division could be the Raiders’ Derek Carr, who is widely considered a fringe top-10 quarterback. Carr would not be the third- or fourth-best quarterback in many divisions but this one features two elite quarterbacks in the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and the Chargers’ Justin Herbert. Also, the Broncos’ newly acquired Russell Wilson has been an elite quarterback for most of his career before having a down season in 2021.

The Chiefs were the only team of four that didn’t load up their roster with big names this offseason, but they’ve won the division six seasons in a row and are coming off an AFC championship appearance. There are a lot of directions in which this division could shake out. For example, no one would be surprised if the Raiders finished last in the division and at the same time, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if Las Vegas had a top-five offense and won the division. There are realistic avenues for each team to finish first as well as finish last.

Where’s Jessie Bates as Bengals training camp begins?

Where's Jessie Bates as Bengals training camp begins?

The most discussed Bengals player of the offseason will continue to hold that banner until he actually shows up at training camp. When will that be? Will it happen at all?

Jessie Bates has yet to sign the franchise tag and is under no obligation to show up at camp and cannot be fined for his absence. Not until the games start will he need to sign to start collecting his $12.9 million one week at a time.

The sides didn’t reach an extension at the July 15 deadline and the Bengals’ offer of $14 million per season and $19 million guaranteed was well short of the top of the market for the position, recently reset by the Steelers’ Minkah Fitzpatrick signing for an average annual value of $18 million with $36 million fully guaranteed.

Rams' Matthew Stafford throws publicly on Day 1 of camp

On Friday, Sean McVay confirmed that Matthew Stafford would be cleared to throw in camp. The Rams have him on a training plan as they monitor how his arm reacts to the increasing workload. Stafford said he had throwing sessions in the time between OTAs and camp, but there’s nothing that can simulate a full practice.

“It feels good to get out there. Definitely knocking some rust off and feeling it again,” Stafford said. “It’s good to … stress it a little bit, and see how it reacts.”

My main focus will be on my health and recovery. Thank you in advance for your support and well-wishes. I cannot wait to come back stronger than ever. God bless.”
