Between franchise relocations, lead backs who are out with injuries and one of the most memorable finishes in Super Bowl history, the Titans and Rams have an unusual number of connections for two teams in different conferences and geographies.
But here they are, leading their divisions — the Titans are 6-2 and the Rams 7-1 — and expecting more as they meet at 8:20 p.m. ET at SoFi Stadium on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football”. There are two notable players missing from this game: Midseason All-Pro Derrick Henry (IR with broken foot) for the Titans and new Rams acquisition Von Miller (inactive with sprained ankle).
Follow along here for updates, including from The Athletic‘s Joe Rexrode and Jourdan Rodrigue at the stadium.

Rexrode: What I’m watching with the Titans tonight
I’m looking for the Titans to be competitive in this game, to the surprise of some I’m sure, largely because this is exactly the kind of moment under Mike Vrabel — major adversity, powerful opponent, counted out — that has produced some of the Titans’ best performances.
Of course, losing the team’s best player and a bona fide MVP candidate is new territory. But the Titans have located the kind of pass rush that can help a banged-up secondary, and safety Kevin Byard is making huge plays at an All-Pro level. I think the defense will keep the score manageable, and then it’s up to Ryan Tannehill and the Derrick Henry-less offense to figure things out.
It doesn’t help at all that right guard Nate Davis (concussion) is out for this matchup against Aaron Donald and Co. It does help that Julio Jones is back and looked good this week. As long as A.J. Brown (knee, questionable) can go and be close to his recent explosiveness, this offense has a chance.
I’d expect Adrian Peterson to get the most carries among the running back trio, but how many? How effective can he be right away? That will be fascinating.

Von Miller is inactive for the Rams tonight
At the time of Tuesday’s trade, Rams sources were very expectant that OLB Von Miller would be available as early as tonight’s game against Tennessee even in light of his ankle sprain; external reports and his status as a game-day decision slowly walked back that expectation throughout this past week.
With Miller still nursing a sprained ankle, his debut likely will come on Monday Night Football at San Francisco in Week 10.

Here are the Titans’ inactives for tonight
The Titans’ actives of note here at SoFi Stadium are WR A.J. Brown and LT Taylor Lewan. Both were questionable with knees, both are obviously crucial to the Titans’ hopes. Their inactive of note is WR Josh Reynolds, the former Ram who won’t be taking on his old team. He simply can’t crack the rotation, especially with Julio Jones active.

Rodrigue: What I’m watching with the Rams tonight
The Rams face a tough opponent on Sunday night in the form of Tennessee, but they are buoyed by an offense that ranks No. 1 in overall EPA and EPA per pass play behind quarterback Matthew Stafford and receivers Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods and Van Jefferson. Stafford and Woods both missed most of the week with respective back and foot issues but are expected to be active against the Titans.
Meanwhile, eyes will be on whether new Ram Von Miller suits up for his first game with his new team after Tuesday’s blockbuster trade, or the Rams opt to rest him another week. Los Angeles also lost Sebastian Joseph-Day, its top run defender, to a pectoral injury and against a run-heavy team like the Titans, that may figure to be a big loss.

How The Athletic’s staff sees Rams-Titans playing out
How The Athletic‘s staff sees Titans-Rams playing out
Both teams are leading their divisions, but it hasn’t been easy. Tennessee has encountered the most recent challenge, losing NFL leading rusher Derrick Henry to a broken bone in his foot.
The Athletic‘s writers see a clear difference between the teams, going 8-for-8 in picking the Rams.
Oddsmakers have the Rams as a 7.5-point favorite, but The Athletic‘s model sees it much, much closer, with the Rams favored by just 3.1 points. The model gives Los Angeles a 59-percent chance to win.
Meanwhile Sheil Kapadia is veering from the pack and taking the points, while Vic Tafur is unfazed by the spread and is taking the Rams, too.

This game is not lacking for Midseason All-Pros, with one exception
The Athletic‘s Midseason All-Pro team was published this week, and five players from the Titans or Rams made the cut. The two teams account for six percent of the NFL’s population but 21 percent of its midseason All-Pros.
Rams WR Cooper Kupp will try to extend his NFL leads in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns against the Titans.
Rams DT Aaron Donald has become a fixture of teams like this, and it continues this season.
Forty percent of the midseason All-Pro secondary are in this game too, with Jalen Ramsey representing the Rams at cornerback and Kevin Byard of the Titans having one of the best seasons of any safety so far in 2021.
And even though Tennessee’s Derrick Henry won’t play for the rest of the regular season, his play so far this season was dominant.

Will we or won’t we see Von Miller in a Rams uniform tonight?
The Rams made arguably the biggest trade deadline move of any team this week when they traded for Von Miller, one of the best pass rushers of his generation. But Miller is recovering from a sprained ankle, and Los Angeles coach Sean McVay said Friday that Miller would be a game-time decision today.
No matter when he debuts, his acquisition was a move totally fitting the Rams’ philosophy.
Miller leads all active players with 110.5 sacks and ranks third among active players with 142 tackles for losses.
