Neco Williams reveals he played in World Cup opener day after grandfather’s death

Williams started at left wing-back, only giving way in the 79th minute to Brennan Johnson.

Yesterday was the toughest news I’ve ever had to face and that was listening to my mum tell me my grandad past away last night😓 to go from crying all day to start in a World Cup game was extremely tough but I got through it from the support of my team mates and family❤️🕊 pic.twitter.com/3pcxl0C3Qc

Berhalter’s full-time assessment

This is Berhalter’s third World Cup, but first as a manager. He played a significant role in 2002.

#USMNT Gregg Berhalter: Walking into the locker room after the game you could see the disappointment in the group. … Proud of the effort. Guys worked hard. Didn’t look like a team playing in their first World Cup. … In the end we got hurt by direct play from Wales.

News: Welsh FA investigating reports that fans had rainbow bucket hats removed by stadium security

Another controversy.

The Welsh FA are investigating claims that fans had rainbow bucket hats removed ahead of their game against the United States,

Former Wales international Laura McAllister told ITV News: “We were aware when we were queuing up that people were in the rainbow bucket hats which are a symbol of LGBT+ rights in Wales. They had their hats taken off.

“Clearly, I was not going to take my hat off, fans were aware that was likely to happen. When we got through security, some of the security guards said ‘Take the hat off’. When I asked why, they said it was a ‘banned symbol’ and that we weren’t allowed to wear it in the stadium.”

Pulisic stars

Man of the match?

Christian Pulisic’s composure on the ball before playing a through ball behind Wales’ defence and into the path of Weah showed why Chelsea forked out £58million for the playmaker back in January 2019.

The former Borussia Dortmund man has only been given three Premier League starts for Chelsea this season which on one hand is disappointing for Pulisic, while on the other means he should be fresh for this tournament.

Pulisic has a terrific goalscoring record for the USMNT with 21 goals in 52 games for his country and showed on Monday night that he can also be the USMNT’s main playmaker.

Iranian state television censors players protesting anthem

Iranian state television censors players protesting anthem

Iranian state television censored footage of the Iran team refusing to sing the national anthem ahead of the country’s opening match against England.

Irib TV3, operated by Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), also muted the live feed when anti-regime chants could be heard.

There have been widespread protests against Iran’s conservative clerical leadership, which has ruled the country since 1979.

These protests were provoked by the death of Mahsa Amini in September, a 22-year-old woman who was killed by the morality piece for wearing her hijab incorrectly.

The Oslo-based Iran Human Rights group says that at least 326 people have been killed across 22 provinces, including 43 children.

According to multiple sources in Iran, who asked to remain anonymous for their own safety, footage from the state television broadcaster, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), stopped a live stream of the anthem halfway through after seeing the players’ actions.

They showed the first three Iran players failing to sing, before cutting off the feed when the third successive player was failing to sing. Instead, the screen showed a wide shot of the stadium, rather than the players, with the music continuing.

The Athletic has contacted IRIB for comment.

Netherlands 2-0 Senegal

Netherlands 2-0 Senegal

A Cody Gakpo header and a Davy Klaassen strike gave the Netherlands a World Cup opening game win over Senegal on Monday.

The Netherlands had a chance to open the scoring after just six minutes but no one got onto the end of a dangerous cross. Ismaila Sarr then fired over in the first 10 minutes.

Frenkie de Jong missed a chance of his own, failing to get a shot away after being sent through by Steven Bergwijn. It spoke for a first-half in which the Dutch rarely tested Edouard Mendy in the Senegal goal.

And that continued in the second-half, with Louis van Gaal turning to Memphis Depay for some inspiration as the game wore on.

Senegal did suffer a serious blow as the game edged towards the latter stages, with Cheikhou Kouyate having to be taken off the pitch on a stretcher after suffering an injury.

And they came close to putting the ball past Andries Noppert in the Netherlands goal when he turned away an Idrissa Gueye shot — although the flag then went up for offside.

But it was Gakpo’s flicked header that essentially decided the game with six minutes remaining. Davy Klaassen then scored a second for the Netherlands to seal the win.

Updates on fitness of Maguire and Kane

Updates on fitness of Maguire and Kane

Gareth Southgate has clarified Harry Maguire did not suffer a head injury during England’s win over Iran.

The defender had to leave the pitch during the second half of today’s game. Maguire went down shortly after Mehdi Taremi got Iran’s first goal in their 6-2 loss, and appeared to be having a check for concussion.

But Southgate made it clear that the Manchester United captain was just feeling unwell.

He said: “Harry Maguire felt ill. (He) flagged it before the goal. There was no point carrying on but other than that no causes for concern.”

The Athletic asked Maguire if he was OK and the defender replied “should be”.

There were also worries about Harry Kane after the game after he went down following a heavy tackle while clutching his ankles. The Tottenham striker has had issues with injuries to his ankles to the past.

But Southgate has no fears over him: “Other than that haven’t seen anything of concern (about injuries).

“I think Harry Kane is fine. It obviously looked like a bad tackle but he carried on in the game. We took him off really because we felt it was a moment we could do that.”
